Finding restaurants near Petco Park is easy. Finding one where you can sit down, eat well and still make first pitch takes a bit more planning. This guide is for people who want dinner before the Padres game or a concert, not a hot dog in line on the concourse. It covers when to book, how long the walk takes, what to order when you're short on time, what you can and can't carry into the ballpark, and where to go once the game ends.

It's written around Salvatore's Cucina & Lounge, an Italian restaurant in downtown San Diego's Marina District, an 11-minute walk from the ballpark. The timing advice works for any sit-down dinner before a game.

In this guide:

How far is Salvatore's from Petco Park?

Salvatore's is 0.6 miles from Petco Park, about an 11-minute walk. The restaurant is at 750 Front St, near the bay in the Marina District, and the ballpark is to the southeast, at the waterfront end of the Gaslamp Quarter and East Village.

One easy route heads toward the water and follows the Martin Luther King Jr. Promenade, the landscaped walkway alongside Harbor Drive, east toward the ballpark. It's flat, it's mostly away from the busiest Gaslamp sidewalks, and you'll walk it with other fans in the last half hour before first pitch. Allow 15 minutes if your group is large or you're walking with kids. After a night game, the walk back takes the same time, or less if you go before the final out.

Because Salvatore's sits just outside the Gaslamp, it tends to be quieter on game nights than the blocks right next to the stadium. You get a calmer dinner and still finish with a short walk.

What time should you eat at restaurants near Petco Park before a Padres game?

Plan to sit down about two hours before first pitch. That gives you about an hour and a quarter at the table, an 11-minute walk, and time to get through the gates and find your seats without rushing.

Work backward from first pitch on your ticket:

  • First pitch minus 2 hours: sit down for dinner.
  • First pitch minus 45 minutes: ask for the check.
  • First pitch minus 30 minutes: start walking.
  • First pitch minus 15 minutes: get through security and find your seat.

For example, if first pitch is 6:40 PM, aim for a 4:40 PM table. Salvatore's opens at 5 PM Monday to Friday, so for a weeknight night game book the first seating at 5 PM and order quickly. Arriving right at opening also puts you inside happy hour, 5 to 7 PM on weekdays at the bar and patio, with $10 cocktails like the Aperol Spritz and Negroni and $6 beer. See the happy hour details.

Weekend and day games

On Saturday and Sunday, Salvatore's opens at noon and serves weekend brunch until 4 PM. That suits an afternoon game: brunch first, then the walk over. For a Saturday evening game or concert, you have more room, since the restaurant is open all afternoon.

Book ahead on game days

Game and concert nights bring big crowds downtown, so reserve through OpenTable rather than walking in with a group. If it's just one or two of you, walk-ins are welcome at the bar. For a group of more than 15, such as a team outing or a work group with suite tickets, contact the events team through the private events page instead.

What should you order if you're short on time?

Tell your server when first pitch is as soon as you sit down, and order your whole meal at once. That's the biggest time-saver, whatever you choose.

Dishes that suit a pre-game dinner:

  • To share while you decide: Meatballs ($16), Arancini ($18) or Fried Gnocchi ($16). Focaccia is $4.
  • Pasta, made in-house daily: the Spicy Vodka Rigatoni ($29) is one of the dishes guests mention most in reviews. The Short Rib Ragú ($30) is a heartier option.
  • Something simple: the Burger ($22) or Chicken Parmigiana ($28).
  • If it's a big night: Steak Frites ($47).

Keep dessert for the walk back or for the lounge after the game. If you want something with dinner, an Espresso Martini ($18) is a good pick before a long evening. The full menu has everything with current prices.

Eating a proper meal before you go in is also a standard tip in Padres fan guides. If you've already had good food near Petco Park, you only need a drink or a snack once you're in your seat.

What can you bring into Petco Park?

Check the ballpark's rules before you leave the restaurant, because you can't drop things off once you're at the gate. The main points from the Padres' Petco Park entry policies:

  • Gate times: all gates open 90 minutes before first pitch for regular-season games. Opening Day, special promotions and postseason games can be different.
  • Bags: only single-compartment clear plastic bags up to 12" x 6" x 12", clutches or purses up to 5" x 7", and infant or medical bags.
  • Outside food: allowed for your own use, but containers must be soft-sided. A rigid takeout box from dinner may not get through.
  • Water: one factory-sealed bottle of still water up to one liter. Reusable bottles up to one liter must be empty at entry.
  • Re-entry: allowed on most game days if your ticket is scanned on the way out, but not after the game ends. Promotional days and concerts can have stricter rules.

For concerts and other events, gate times and bag rules are set event by event. Check the event page on the Padres site the day before.

Where should you park for a game and dinner?

The simplest plan is to park once near dinner and walk to the ballpark. Salvatore's has on-site underground parking with validation, with the entrance on Union Street, one block in from Front Street.

Validation is for dining guests. If you want to leave the car while you're at the game, ask the host when you arrive how long validation covers, so you're not surprised when you leave.

Watch out for meters near the ballpark. The City of San Diego charges $10 an hour at meters within about half a mile of Petco Park during Padres games and other big events. The higher rate starts about two hours before the event and lasts for its duration. Downtown meter hours were also extended in 2025, with some meters that used to stop at 8 PM now running to 10 PM. Read the sign at the meter every time.

If you'd rather not drive, the San Diego Trolley stops close to the ballpark. Check MTS for game-day service. For more options, see the guide on where to park downtown for dinner.

Where can you get a drink after the game?

On Friday and Saturday nights, head back to Salvatore's. The lounge behind the dining room runs as the Medusa Room until 2 AM. It's a better place to talk about the game than a packed sidewalk bar: low pendant lights, leopard banquettes, a backlit marble bar and DJ energy on late nights. There are 11 signature cocktails, from the Carajillo ($18) to the Meridian ($20), plus two zero-proof drinks for whoever is driving.

Late night is Friday and Saturday only. Monday to Thursday Salvatore's closes at 11 PM, and Sunday at 10 PM. After a weeknight game that ends late, you may not have long, so check the time before you set off. Find out more about late night at the Medusa Room.

If you're making a Saturday of it, there's live music too: a harpist plays on Saturday evenings, on a harp once owned by Harpo Marx. More on that in the guide to restaurants with live music in San Diego.
